The Kyoto Museums Association was established in 1992 with 101 members, and with the intent of furthering museum and art gallery activities by bringing together in cooperation all of these such facilities in Kyoto.
In August 2011 the Association crossed the threshold of 200 member museums and art galleries, developing into a museum network on a scale almost unprecedented for all of Japan, and spreading further into the kind of activities that only such an Association can conduct.
